Dominic Thiem recently tipped Kyrgios as an underdog to win the title, but he is keeping quiet about his own chances. The Austrian has endured a bitterly disappointing route into Wimbledon, winning just one match in his two most recent tournaments. He will need to be on the ball from the onset for his opening clash against Vasek Pospisil, who won the 2014 men’s doubles title at Wimbledon. Further afield, he could play Gilles simon followed by Paolo Lorenzi.

Former finalist Tomas Berdych will be out to prove a point in the men’s draw. This season the Czech has endured a roller coaster season with a win-loss of only 26-13 on the tour. He will start against Jeremy Chardy followed by either Borna Coric or Ryan Harrison. Should Berdych meet Thiem, it will be their first meeting since the 2014 US Open.
One of the most interesting first round matches in the section will be between Richard Gasquet and David Ferrer. Unseeded Ferrer leads their head-to-head 9-3.
