Section 2
Stan Wawrinka has never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the tournament, but remains on the verge of history. Should the Swiss player triumph, he would become on the eighth player to have a career grand slam.
Known as a player that shines on the biggest stages of the tour, Wawrinka faces a testing opener against Russian star Daniil Medvedev. The 21-year-old enters the tournament after reaching the quarter-finals at Queen’s followed by the semi finals at Eastbourne.
“A player who can do it (achieve the career Slam), it’s something amazing, for sure. But for me it’s not something I think about it,” said world number three Wawrinka.
2011 semifinalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sits on the other side of Wawrinka’s section. The Frenchman will start against wildcard Cameron Norrie and could play Sam Querrey in the third round. Querrey remains a dangerous player in the draw after stunning Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last year.
Also featuring in the section is 31st seed Fernando Verdasco, who will be making his 15th consecutive appearance. The Spaniard has endured a disappointing build up to the grand slam after only winning one match in two tournaments. Tommy Haas will also feature in the section for what will be his last time at Wimbledon as a player. Haas will play Ruben Bemelmans in his opening match.
