The All England Lawn Tennis Club have announced an increase in prize money for the event.
There has been huge attention over prize money at Grand Slams with players feeling their concerns are not being heard.
The argument is that it doesn’t match up to the revenue Grand Slams get in terms of ticket sales, broadcasting etc.
They want their fair share of the prize money.
Today, Wimbledon has announced a 20% increase from 2025 in prize money which is up by 10.7 million from the previous edition.
The winner will get 3.6 million pounds which is up 600,000 from last year while the runner-up will receive 1.8 million pounds.
There is also a 21% increase in first round prize money while prize money at qualifying competition is up by 25%.
That is not all though as Wimbledon are also investing in facilities with their expected to be an additional floor of player facilities ahead of the 2027 Championships.
There will be a multi-million pound investment into practice investment while also offering more playing opportunities at grassroots level.
In the announcement the chair of the All England Club, Deborah Jevans, was happy with the promises made as The Championships looks to excite once again, “I am delighted to announce a total prize money fund of £64.2 million for The Championships 2026, a very significant increase of 20% from £53.5 million last year,” Evans said in a press release.
“This announcement recognises the success of The Championships, and that we operate a sustainable programme that allows us not only to increase prize money, but also to invest in facilities, the grass court season and support British and international tennis.
“We are clear that as Wimbledon grows, the players will continue to share in that success.“
It is clear that today’s announcement will be a pleasing response to players concerns in terms of general facilities and the upward trend in prize money.
However, whether it is the response that the players are looking for only time will tell.
Wimbledon starts on the 29th of June.
