Danil Medvedev came back from one set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego 3-6 6-3 6-3 reaching the quarter finals at the Dubai Duty Free Championships. Medvedev won just 53% of his first serve points.
Medvedev broke serve in the second game and held serve in the third game to open up a 3-0 lead. Medvedev broke back in the fifth game to recuce the gap to 2-3. Sonego broke for the second time in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead and saved a break point to hold serve for 5-2. Medvedev saved five break points in the eighth game to hold serve at deuce in the eighth game. Sonego rallied from 0-40 down to serve out the first set on his ninth set point.
The top seed earned the decisive break at love in the eighth game after two forehand errors and a backhand error from Sonego to win the second set 6-3.
The third set went on serve in the fourth game of the third set. Sonego saved the first break point with an ace, but Medvedev converted his second chance at deuce to take a 3-2 lead. Medvedev sealed the win with a second break in the ninth game.
Medvedev set up a quarter final match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who advanced after Jakub Mesnik was forced at 6-7 (7-9) 0-1. “I went on court and was not feeling right. I was too nervous and too tight, which does not happen often to me. I was making a lot of mistakes and had nerves. Sometimes It takes a set to calm down and if I continue to do what I did in the first set, that is not going to work. I just had to change, to be more calm, and if it does not work, it is his day, but it worked”, said Medvedev.
