Taylor Fritz is confident that the American contingent can contend for grand slams.
Fritz has had a career best season having won his maiden Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells which was followed by reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
The 24 year-old is currently the number one ranked American and is one of six Americans ranked inside the world’s top 50.
Now Fritz believes that the Americans are in a position to contend for grand slam titles, “I think that Americans can contend for Grand Slams right now,” Fritz was quoted as saying by Forbes.
“I think there was a long period where it was just basically [Roger] Federer, [Novak] Djokovic, [Rafael Nadal], [Andy] Murray and it was always going to be one of those guys.
“I think now times are changing a bit, there’s no one that’s overly dominant right now so I feel like anyone between 10 people could win the tournament.
“I feel really confident. I feel like I’ve kind of dealt with injuries on and off leading up so a big focus for me in the last couple weeks is getting to train a lot, in the gym a lot, to kind of build that base back up because I think right now the tennis is there. What I need to make sure I’m going to be all there with is the fitness and feeling like I’m healthy.”
Fritz has every right to be confident having beaten Rafael Nadal this year and producing consistent results on the tour.
The American is the tenth seed at the US Open this year where he will face a qualifier on Monday with Botic Van De Zandschulp being his potential third round match.
Fritz’s Projected US Open Draw:
R1: Qualifier
R2: Pedro Cachin
R3: Botic Van De Zandschulp [24]
R4: Casper Ruud [5]
QF: Stefanos Tsitsipas [4]
SF: Daniil Medvedev [1]
Final: Rafael Nadal [2]
