Daniil Medvedev will look to defend his title this year but faces stiff competition from Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
The current world number one Daniil Medvedev will put his US Open title and world number one ranking on the line when he aims to win the title he won last year.
In last year’s final the Russian defeated Novak Djokovic but won’t need to do that this year after the Serb withdrew due to the US border’s need for all non-US citizens to be vaccinated.
However Medvedev will face competition from Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal over the next two weeks but the good news for Medvedev as he won’t have to play either player until the final.
Medvedev is in the same half as Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Russian will begin his campaign against Stefan Kozlov.
The likes of Nikoloz Basilashvili, Nick Kyrgios and Roberto Bautista Agut could all be in the Russian’s way before a quarter-final showdown with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
In the other quarter in the top half of the draw Stefanos Tsitsipas will begin against a qualifier and potentially have to face big-serving American Maxime Cressy in the third round.
Matteo Berrettini could await in the fourth round with Andy Murray also in the same section of the draw as he takes on 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo.
A potential quarter-finalist for Tsitsipas is Casper Ruud, who will begin his campaign against Britain’s Kyle Edmund with Taylor Fritz also appearing in this part of the draw.
In the bottom half of the draw Carlos Alcaraz will look to win his maiden grand slam title as he begins his campaign against Sebastian Baez.
However a massive obstacle in the form of Borna Coric could await in the third round with the Croatian just recently winning the Cincinnati title.
Hubert Hurkacz is a potential quarter-final match for Alcaraz with the Pole having a tricky opening match against Oscar Otte.
Grigor Dimitrov and Jannik Sinner could also await Hurkacz in the fourth round in what is a fun section of the draw.
Lastly Rafael Nadal is at the bottom of the draw as he takes on Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata.
Nadal will look to win his 23rd grand slam title and also claim the world number one crown.
Aslan Karatsev and Miomir Kecmanovic are potential first week opponents for Nadal before a potential fourth round match against Diego Schwartzman or Frances Tiafoe.
Nadal’s potential quarter-final is Cameron Norrie, who begins against Benoit Paire.
The Brit could also have to overcome Holger Rune, Denis Shapovalov and Holger Rune in order to reach the last eight.
