Roberto Bautista Agut came back from one set down to beat Danil Medvedev 1-6 6-4 6-3 to advance to the semifinal after 2 hours and 13 minutes. Bautista Agut fended off 15 of the 20 break points and won 71 % of second serve return points.
Medvedev broke twice to race out to a 4-0 lead and closed out the first set with a powerful first serve after just 28 minutes.
Bautista Agut fended off three consecutive break points at 0-40 in the first game of the second set before breaking serve to open up a 3-1 lead. Medvedev got two consecutive breaks to take a 4-3, but Bautista Agut won three consecutive games to seal the second set 6-4.
After a trade of breaks at the start of the third set Bautista Agut saved a break point and held serve to take a 2-1 lead. The Spanish player earned the break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Bautista Agut saved two break points, as he was serving for the match at 5-4, and held serve in a marathon ninth game to secure his spot in the semifinals.
Bautista Agut set up a semifinal against either Novak Djokovic or Jan Lennard Struff.
“I tried to do some different things and mix up a little bit with the slice. I hit some great volleys and it was a fantastic match for me”, said Bautista Agut.
