On June 10th Fabio Fognini became the oldest player to make their debut in the world’s top 10 since 1973 at the age of 32. The honour follows what has been a mixed first half of the season for the Italian, where he has won 18 out of 30 matches played. At the Monte Carlo Masters Fognini won his biggest title yet. A tournament where he defeated both Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal.

“Of course I’m happy. I hadn’t played well during the first three months of this year, and then, at the first major tournament in Europe, I came close to winning it. I did it in Monte Carlo and that’s when my expectations and goals changed.” Fognini told reporters at the Croatian Open in Umag.

Fognini, who is only the third Italian man to ever crack the top 10, knows he faces a tough time ahead in order to hold his place in the rankings. He is currently scheduled to play five consecutive tournaments prior to the US Open. In the top 20, the only other player set to play that many is John Isner.

“Now, I’m ranked ninth in the world; however, at the same time, I know that I have a difficult second part of the season before me. It is going to be a tough challenge as, right now, the difference between the eighth and the fifteenth player in the world is minor,” he explained.

Fognini is the top seed at the Croatian Open this week.
