Rafael Nadal’s presence at next week’s ATP Finals in London remains unknown after his family doctor provided an update on his condition.
Doubts surrounding the world No.1 started last week when he withdrew from the Paris Masters due to a knee problem. A week prior to that, Nadal also skipped the Swiss indoors due to ‘over-stressing’ of the area. Now questions are mounting about if the Spaniard will be fit in time for the ATP Finals, an event that he is yet to win in his career.
Dr Ángel Ruiz Cotorro spoke about Nadal’s ongoing issue in an interview with Cadena SER. He has assured that that Spaniard hasn’t sustained any ‘serious’ damage to his knee. Hoping that he will be able to recover in time for the season-ending event.
“He arrived there (in Paris) in good condition, but after the first or second game, he began to have small discomforts.” Cotorro said.
“I was worried, we did a series of tests and there was no serious (injury) in the tendon. We are going to do a treatment to continue with all the muscular work, empowerment, rehabilitation, so that he can get to London, which is what he wants and he really is very excited “
Cotorro’s optimistic outlook isn’t without caution. The long season is starting to take its toll on Nadal as it has done with many other players. During a successful year, he has already won six titles on the tour. Two of which occurred at grand slam events in Paris and New York. Overall, he has already played 77 matches this season, winning 67 of them.
“You always have to be optimistic, but also realistic.” Explained Cotorro. “You have to see that we are at the end of the year, after an extraordinary season.”
“Now he suffers some small discomforts within a pathology that we already know, in a tendon in which he has already had ailments with on other occasions. We will try to do everything possible so that he can be in good condition, because he wants to be, it is the only tournament (title) he’s missing.”
According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, Nadal will make a final decision concerning his attendance on Saturday. The day before the tournament gets underway. On Four previous occasions he has been forced to miss the season-ending event due to injury.
Currently the signs are looking good for Nadal’s London hopes. Although Cotorro has urged him to not play if the issue worsens.
“If the tendon is holding in a progressive way, you will be in a position to play, if you can not stand it, it is a risk that is not worth taking.” He concluded.
The draw ceremony for the ATP Finals will take place on Wednesday.
