Boris Becker
No longer guiding Novak Djokovic on the tour, Boris Becker has been impressed by Federer’s comeback. Despite the intention of the Swiss player to sit out the majority of the upcoming clay-court season, Becker told ESPN Argentina that Federer is capable of dethroning Andy Murray from the top spot by the end of the year.
“If Roger [Federer] plays at the level he has shown in the last three months then he will have high hopes of finishing the year as number one in the world,” said Becker.
Becker’s word are supported by the statistics. In 2017 Federer currently has a spotless 12-0 winning record when playing a top-20 player. During Indian Wells and Miami, he dropped just two sets (against Tomas Berdych and Nick Kyrgios).
“I think he was shocked [at his performance level] after being injured for half a year,” Becker later added. “He’s over 35… I don’t think anyone expected him to achieve this performance explosion.”
