Last year’s French Open champion Stan Wawrinka warmed up for the defence of his title with his third trophy of the year in Geneva where he beat Marin Cilic 6-4 7-6 (13-11) in a match between two Grand Slam champions.
Wawrinka got his only break in the third game to 30 to take the first set 6-4. The Swiss player rallied from 15-30 in the 8th game with three aces. He wasted a set point but held his serve at 40-40 with his forehand.
In the second set Cilic saved three break points to open up a 4-1 lead. Wawrinka dropped his serve in the fourth game to trail 2-5 in the second set. He saved a set point before breaking back in the ninth game to rally to 4-5. Wawrinka won his third consecutive game to claw his way back to draw level to 5-5.
Cilic raced out to 4-1 in the tie-break but wasted five set points. The Swiss player clinched the tie-break 13-11 on his second match point to extend his lead in their head-to-head matches to 10-2-
Wawrinka has remained unbeaten in the finals he has played since the start of 2014. Wawrinka has clinched his 14th title of the year and his first in his home tournament
