Stan Wawrinka said his Center Court showdown with Novak Djokovic was ‘tough’ but he can still hold his head up high.

Wawrinka, who is a three-time Grand Slam champion, fell 6-3, 6-1, 7-6, to the second seed who is seeking an eighth Wimbledon trophy this year. The meeting was the 27th encounter between the two players with Djokovic winning 21 of those.

“It was a tough match, as I expected,” said Wawrinka.
“Right now he’s the best player to play. It’s tough for me to play him here in Wimbledon. In the end, I’m quite happy with my performance. At least I gave a fight.’
“I’m not at his level right now. I’m not at his level of confidence, of play, of everything. I was trying to just play my best game tonight.”

Djokovic’s latest performance saw him produce a total of 38 winners against 26 unforced errors. It is his 31st win in a row at Wimbledon which puts him on level footing with Pete Sampras for most consecutive wins at the tournament.

Meanwhile, Wawrinka can take comfort in the support he received from the crowd. This year was his 17th main draw appearance at Wimbledon.

“The atmosphere was amazing. It also was a chance again to play on Centre Court. It’s always going to be special, playing with the roof, playing night against Novak.” He said.
“I could have done a little bit better at the end of the match. I made two mistakes in a row. That was not the best moment to do that.”

As for Djokovic, he will play Hubert Hurkacz in the last 16 on Sunday.
