LONDON: Cameron Norrie survived a four-and-a-half-hour battle with Nicolas Jarry to book his place in the last eight at Wimbledon.
The world No.61 held his nerve to prevail with a gut-busting 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 6-7(5), 6-3 win under the Court One roof. Norrie is only the fourth British player to have reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon on multiple occasions after previously doing so in 2022. Overall, he has won 15 matches at the tournament, which is more than he has achieved at any other Grand Slam event.
“Honestly, I don’t know how I did that. Credit to Nico (Jarry). He did an unbelievable job,” Norrie said afterwards.
“He played better than me in both tie-breaks (that he lost). I had to keep fighting.
“I forgot to get my coach a birthday present today, so I had to get the win for him!”
After the match, there was a tense moment between the two players after Jarry accused his rival of being ‘too vocal.’ However, that was downplayed by Norrie, who describes it as ‘his energy.’
Norrie’s marathon win has virtually secured him a return back into the top 50 next week for the first time since January. Coming into Wimbledon, his best result in 2025 was reaching the semi-finals of a clay-court event in Geneva, as well as the quarter-finals of two others on a hardcourt.
Speaking frankly about the past few months, Norrie admits he has at times struggled with the mental side of his game.
“At the beginning of this year, I struggled with confidence,” he admits.
“I want to enjoy my tennis more, and I’m doing that. It is a bonus to win, but enjoying it is what matters. I am so happy to be in another quarter-final in the best tournament in the world.”
Norrie is currently experiancing his best Grand Slam run for three years.
