After receiving an 18 month suspension for failing to attend anti-doping tests outside of competition, Mikael Ymer will return to tennis at the Davis Cup later this month.
The Swede had initially retired from tennis as an appeal to CAS (Court of Arbitration of Sport) failed and therefore believed it wasn’t worth playing tennis anymore.
However the former world number 50 will be returning to the court when Sweden take on Australia in Davis Cup qualifiers action after the Australian Open.
Speaking to Expressen, sporting director of the Swedish tennis federation confirmed that Ymer will return to action in Davis Cup, “The plan is for him to be involved. He has been training for some time now,” Aspelin was quoted by tennisuptodate as saying.
“It strengthens the team a lot. ‘Micke’ was a key factor in Sweden reaching the Davis Cup Finals three times in a row. He has been extremely stable in the context of the Davis Cup, just like his brother Elías.
“Mikael is our best player and can compete with the best, that’s for sure. It’s important to have him in the team.”
Mikael will most likely be joining his brother Elias in the team who is currently 327 in the world.
As for Mikael he will aim to capitalise on his three third round appearances that he has already achieved at Grand Slams in his career as well as a final appearance at an ATP 250 event.
Sweden’s Davis Cup qualifier against Australia will take place the weekend after the Australian Open on the weekend of 1st-2nd of February.
