Tomas Martin Etcheverry battles past Andy Murray in Basel

Tomas Martin Etcheverry came back from one set down to beat Andy Murray 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-2 after 3 hours and 8 minutes at the Swiss Open in Basel. 

Etcheverry earned an early break in the first game of the opening set. Murray earned a break point with a lob before breaking back with a volley at the net to draw level to 2-2. Murray trailed 4-5 in the tie-break before earning a set point at 6-5 with a crosscourt forehand winner. The three-time Grand Slam champion converted his chance with a deft volley.

Etcheverry earned an early break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead and saved four break points in a 16-minute seventh game to hold serve for 5-2. The Argentine player served out on his second set point. 

Etcheverry converted his fourth break point in a long opening game of the third set after two an da half hours on the clock. 

Etcheverry earned his second break in the seventh game to open up a 5-2 lead and earned a match point with a passing shot. He sealed the win by claiming his third consecutive game on his second match point with a service winner. 

Etcheverry will take on either Hoger Rune or Sebastian Baez for a spot in the semifinal. 

Defending champion Felix Auger Aliassime beat Swiss wild card Leandro Riedl 6-3 6-2. The Canadian player will face Botic Van de Zandschulp, who beat Roberto Bautista Agut. 

Auger Aliassime broke in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead. Riedl broke back in the fifth game and held serve in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Auger Aliassime converted his third break point in the eighth game and served out the first set on his second set point. Auger Aliassime broke twice in the third and fifth games and sealed the win on his first match point in the eighth game. 

“I thought he was playing well and I think he can be proud of himself because I played a great match. I think I showed up with a great level today. He still showed very good things, so he has got a great future, but on my part I am happy I am happy to get through to the second round here”, said Auger Aliassime.
