Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat Ben Shelton 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-3 to reach the second round at the Paris Rolex Masters in Paris Bercy.
Shelton fired 15 aces but he made four double faults.
Both players went on serve to set up a tie-break. Davidovich Fokina saved a set point to hold serve in the 12th game. Davidovich Fokina earned three set points at 6-3 with two mini-breaks. Shelton pulled one mini-break, but Davidovich Fokina sealed the tie-break on his second set point.
Davidovich Fokina broke serve to love in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead. Shelton converted his second break point in the fifth game and held serve at 15 to draw level to 3-3. Shelton broke for the second time in the 11th game to close out the second set 6-4.
Davidovich Fokina earned a break in the sixth game of the third set to open up a 4-2 lead and served out the third set 6-3 on his third match point.
