Czech Republic clashed against Serbia in a decisive match to determine which country would advance as winners of Group C in Valencia. Czech Republic is the only nation to win all of their nine matches in the 2023 Davis Cup.
Eighteen year-old Jakub Mesnik beat Dusan Lajovic 6-3 6-2 on his debut in the Davis Cup to give Czech Republic a 1-0 lead, before Jiri Lehecka sealed the tie with a 7-6 (9-7) 7-5 win over Laslo Djere.
Lehecka opened up a 4-1 lead and did not convert on three match points on return at 5-4.
Adam Pavlasek and Tomas Machac battled past Novak Djokovic and Nikola Cacic 7-5 6-7 (7-9) 10-3 to complete a 3-0 sweep for Czech Republic.
“It was amazing. Today the reception for the doubles. We never expected there were going to be so many people for the doubles match. They stayed all the way through especially at the beginning of the first set was packed”, said Djokovic.
Australia beats Switzerland 3-0
Both Alex De Minaur and Thanasi Kokkinakis won their singles matches in straight sets earning Australia a 2-0 lead against Switzerland in a Davis Cup Finals Group Stage tie in Manchester.
Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell completed a 3-0 sweep with a win in the doubles match to seal a spot in the top 8 for Australia.
Kokkinakis beat Dominic Stricker 6-3 7-5 in the first match to give the lead. The Australian player fended off five of the six break points and converted on three of his five break points.
De Minaur sealed the tie with a 6-4 6-3 win against Marc Andrea Huesler. The Aussie player converted on three of his eleven break points.
Ebden and Purcell beat Huesler and Stricker 6-2 6-4 in the doubles match to earn Australia a top two finish in Group B.
“We just have a great connection on court. Such a good understanding of where we are moving, what our strengths are and how to cover the court, which is a huge part in doubles”, said Purcell.
Great Britain will face France on Sunday in a winner-takes-all tie.
