Belinda Bencic fired 10 aces and dropped just seven points on her serve to beat Garbine Muguruza 6-3 6-4 in 74 minutes in Adelaide 2.
Bencic earned a break in the second game of the first set and in the ninth game of the second set and did not face any break points. The Swiss player dropped just point on her serve in the second serve. She hit 21 winners to just seven unforced errors.
Muguruza played a solid match in her second match of the season. The Spanish player fired eight aces and faced just two break points.
Bencic set up a second round match against either Jelena Ostapenko or Anna Kalinskaya.
“I think I served really clean today. I think that was my biggest weapon. I felt very comfortable in my service games and I was able to put pressure on the return”, said Bencic. Anastasya Pavlyuchenkova made her come-back playing her first match in eight months, but she was beaten by Swiss qualifier Jill Teichmann, who beat her Russian opponent 7-5 6-4. Pavlyuchenkova has been sidelined by a knee injury since the Internazionali d’Italia in Rome last May. She entered the Adelaide WTA 500 tournament with the protected ranking. Teichmann earned a break in the final game of each set.
