Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem came back from one set down to beat Marcos Giron 3-6 6-4 6-0 at the Gijon Open reaching his fourth ATP Tour quarter final of the season.
Giron earned an early break at love in the second game. Thiem broke straight back at love in the third game to draw level to 2-2. Both players traded breaks in the fifth and sixth games for 3-3. Giron broke in the eighth game to seal the first set 6-3.
Thiem recovered from squandering a break lead in the sixth game of the second set and broke for the second game in the 10th game to seal the second set 6-4.
Thiem broke three times to take a bagel win in the third set.
“It was a very intense match. Long rallies and lots of running. It was so close throughout the whole match until the third set. At the end of the second set, anything could have happened. I had to save a break point at 4-4 in the second set, if he had made it, he would have been probably the winner. The match was so close, but luckily I was able ”, said Thiem.
