Stan Wawrinka battled past Mikael Ymer 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-5) to reach the semifinal at the Moselle Open in Metz. Wawrinka will play his first ATP Tour semifinal since 2019.
Ymer saved three break points in the opening game of the first set, but Wawrinka earned a break in the third game to seal the first set 6-5.
The second set went on serve until the eighth game when Ymer broke serve to take a 5-3 lead. Wawrinka broke straight back in the ninth game for 4-5. Ymer closed out the second set 6-4 with a second break on his fourth opportunity.
Wawrinka went up a break to take a 2-1 lead in the third set, but he surrendered the break in the eighth game. Wawrinka earned an early mini-break at the start of the tie-break. Ymer pulled back on serve on the 10th game, but Wawrinka won the final two points from 5-5 with a second mini-break to win the tie-break.
Wawrinka set up a semifinal against Alexnder Bublik, who edged past Holger Rune 6-3 5-7 6-4. Bublik earned a break in the sixth game to take the first set 6-3. The second set started with three breaks, as Bublik took a 2-1 lead. Rune won the final three games with two breaks to seal the second set 7-5. Bublik saved a break point in the fourth game before earning the decisive break to seal the third set 6-4.
