Simona Halep and Rafael Nadal exit Roland Garros as the champions with 2.2 million euros in prize money each. The tournament was a milestone occasion for both players, but there were memorable moments for others too. Especially when to came to their after-match press conferences.
The 64-word incident
Australia’s Bernard Tomic was in no mood to speak with the media following his four sets loss to lucky loser Marco Trungelliti. The former Wimbledon quarter-finalist came through three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw. Only to be edged out by Trungelliti, who travelled from Barcelona by car the day before the match.
During the brief press conference Tomic said just 64 words with no answer lasting longer than a sentence. The questions asked amounted to 243 words.
TOMIC: Well, it was okay, no?
TOMIC: Yeah, I guess I was okay.
TOMIC: Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see what’s next.
TOMIC: It is what it is. That’s all I can say.
TOMIC: Yeah. But it changed, then I had to play. That’s it.
TOMIC: It was solid. It was good.
TOMIC: What do you mean?
TOMIC: Next question.
TOMIC: I go home to Monaco and that’s it.
TOMIC: I like it. It’s good.
Tomic has now lost in the first round of the tournament in six of his nine appearances since 2009.
