The Williams sisters bid to be the greatest tennis Olympians ever
With four medals each, Serena and Venus Williams are already one of the most decorated tennis players in Olympic history. Together they have won gold in the doubles at the 2000, 2008 and 2012 Games. On top of that, Venus won the singles title in 2000 and Serena in 2012.
“It means everything to me; the Olympics have always meant so much,” Venus told the Post and Courier earlier this year.
“It’s been a joy and an honour to be part of it. It’s just been icing on the cake with a cherry on top to be able to bring home some medals.”
If Serena or Venus is able to medal in both the singles and doubles this year, they will become the most decorated Olympic medallist in the history of tennis. The record is currently held by Great Britain’s Kathleen McKane Godfree, who won five medals between 1920-1924.
