Roger Federer expected to team up in the mixed doubles with Martina Hingis at the Rio Olympic Games

The Swiss newspaper Le Matin Dimanche reported that Roger Federer will team up in the mixed doubles with Martina Hingis at next summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Federer has accepted to play in the mixed doubles in addition to playing the men’s singles and the men’s doubles with Stan Wawrinka. Federer and Hingis teamed up only once before at the 2001 Hopman Cup where there beat Monica Seles and Jan-Michael Gambill in the final. Between them Federer and Hingis have won 22 Grand Slam singles titles and seven Grand Slam doubles titles. In London 2012 Max Mirniy and Viktoria Azarenka from Belarus won the mixed doubles gold medal after beating Andy Murray and Laura Robson from Great Britain.

“Federer will play with Hingis. It’s decided”, reported Le Matin Dimanche.

The tennis tournament at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be held from 6th to 14th August

Federer is also expected to team up with Stan Wawrinka for the men’s doubles eight years after their Olympic title in Beijing. Four years ago Federer won the Olympic silver medal in London after losing the final aainst Stan Wawrinka. Hingis, who won 11 doubles Grand Slam titles, will team up with her friend Belinda Bencic. Wawrinka, twice Grand Slam champion at the 2014 Australian Open and at the 2015 French Open, will team up with Timea Bacsinszky in the mixed doubles. Federer, who will be bidding to win his first Olympic singles gold medal, will have to face a very busy schedule with 15 matches in just eight days.

“The goal is to win all the gold medals. Why not ? We can always dream”, said Severin Luthi.
