Kevin Anderson battled past Kei Nishikori after a hard-fought match with 7-6 (12-10) 7-6 (7-3) in the best match of the tournament so far. The first set went on serve without break point chances. Anderson clinched a thrilling first set with 12-10 after one hour and 10 minutes after Nishikori failed to convert five set points
The second set went on serve until the 8th game when Nishikori faced the first break point of the match and dropped his serve after a double fault. Nishikori broke straight before taking the edge with 6-5. Anderson won the 12th game on his service game to force the second set to the tie-break. The South African player won the tie-break with 7-3
Anderson set up a quarter final match against Jo Wilfred Tsonga who rallied from a set down to edge Federer’s conqueror Albert Ramos Vinolas with 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4. Tsonga saved a break point in the third game with his first serve before breaking in the next game. Tsonga did not convert a double break point in the sixth game before taking a 5-4 lead. Tsonga dropped his serve to love. Ramos saved three consecutive break points at 5-6 forcing the set to the tie-break. Tsonga opened up a 4-1 lead but he dropped six of the next seven points to lose the break on the 12th point with 5-7.
The second set went on serve until the 12th game when Tsonga got the break to win the second set with 7-5. In the third set the player from Le Mans broke serve in the fifth game with two forehands before holding his next service games to clinch the third set with 6-4.
