TENNIS – Andy Murray opened his Miami campaign with a clear 6-4 6-2 win over Donald Young in 82 minutes to advance to the third round. Rafa Nadal won the All Spanish against Nicolas Almagro. Tomas Berdych beat Hyeon Chung 6-3 6-4. Stan Wawrinka overcame a tough battle against Carlos Berloq with 6-7 (9-11) 7-5 6-2. Diego Sampaolo
Andy Murray, twice Miami champion in 2009 and 2013, got through to the third round of the Miami Open with a 6-4 6-2 win over Donald Young. Murray scored his second win over Young this month after his victory in the Davis Cup match between the USA and Great Britain.
Murray cruised to 4-0 but he dropped serve at 5-2 before clinching the first set with 6-4. Murray got the early break in the second set. The Scotsman never looked back and wrapped up the second set with 6-2.
Murray will take on Santiago Giraldo who beat their previous head-to-head match in Madrid last month.
“It was ridiculously windy, the ball was swirling around all over the place and changing direction during your serve and that makes it tough on your ball toss”, said Murray.
Tomas Berdych beat South Korean Hyeon Chung 6-3 6-4. Chung took a 4-2 lead in the second set but Berdych won four consecutive games to clinch the win in straight sets. Berdych will take on Bernard Tomic who beat US Austin Kraijek 7-6 (8-6) 7-5. In the first set both players traded breaks between the sixth and the eighth games. Berdych got the break in the eighth game before serving for the first set. Berdych trailed 1-4 in the second set but he reeled off five consecutive games to clinch the win in straight sets.with 6-4 6-2.
Rafa Nadal, who played in four finals in 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014 in his 11 appearances in Miami but never won this tournament, made a winning debut beating his compatriot Nicholas Almagro
One day before his 30th birthday Stan Wawrinka fought back from a set down to edge past Carlos Berloq with 6-7 (9-11) 7-5 6-2. Wawrinka dropped serve for 3-4 but he broke back before bringing up a set point. He failed to convert it before losing the first set 11-9 after 90 mintes. Wawrinka broke serve for 6-5 in the second set before converting on his third set point. Wawrinka faced some problems with his serve committing 8 double faults but he converted his fourth match point to win the the third set with 6-2 after two hours and 49 minutes.
Kevin Anderson fought back from a set down to edge Sam Querrey 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in two hours and 32 minutes. Querrey served for the match at 6-5 but Anderson recovered to win the second set at the tie-break before getting a early break in the third set.
Dominic Thiem overcame Feliciano Lopez with 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-3. Lopez got an early break but Thiem broke back to draw level to 4-4. Thiem clinched the first set at the tie-break. Thiem dropped his serve in the fifth game and did not recover the break losing the second set. Thiem broke serve in the third game of the third set for 2-1 before closing out with a backhand.
