Flavio Cobolli has more Grand Slam finals in his sights after he lost the Roland Garros final in five sets to Alexander Zverev.
It wasn’t to be for Cobolli as he lost a four hour marathon to Zverev in a classic Roland Garros final.
The Italian was nervous to start the match but eventually found his feet and produced an epic final to be proud of.
After the match Cobolli congratulated Zverev but also thanked himself for an epic fortnight of tennis, “First of all, I want to say congrats to Sascha for this title,” Cobolli started his press conference by saying.
“I think he deserve it. I also think today he deserve it more than me at the end of the match. But I want to say also thanks to me for what I did in this two weeks. I never expect all my life that this kind of result, and I’m so proud of myself.
“So now I just want to have a great smile and enjoy the night with friends, with the people that I love. It’s always a final of Grand Slam, so I think in this room, no one expect a lot on me. So I have to be proud of myself and try and try and try again.”
It was an incredible contest that lasted four hours as Cobolli pushed the German to his limits in a tense Grand Slam final.
However, Cobolli suffered with cramps in the final set and wasn’t able to spoil Zverev’s big moment today, “Yeah, after the first set on the 6-4 on the tiebreak, I felt cramps on my calf,” Cobolli revealed.
“You know, I tried all my best on the changeover. I took all five minutes. But, you know, my calf was gone. At the end after the second game also my quad, and I felt completely tired. You know, my body leave me on the court.”
As mentioned previously Cobolli has lots to be proud of as he reached his first Grand Slam final of his career.
Furthermore, Cobolli will become a top ten player for the first time in his career after a sensational fornight.
Now the Italian is targeting more Grand Slam finals but is looking to ‘enjoy the journey,’ “This is something that you cannot predict, you know, but I will try,” Cobolli admitted.
“Like I said before, I will try and try and try, but when you reach the first final, why not the second? At the end, I think I deserve to be here on these weeks. Maybe not in the next 10, 15 slams, but like I said also in the ceremony, I’m still young.
“So I have to do work a lot, enjoy this journey, and maybe if I work and enjoy a mix of things, maybe I will reach again the final.”
