Iga Swiatek is into the third round at Roland Garros after a 6-2 6-3 victory over Sara Bejlek on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The four-time champion only lost five games on her way to the third round in Paris but had to work harder than the scoreline showed.
It was a match where Swiatek hit 38 unforced errors, which was 14 more than her opponent but the Pole managed to elevate her game when it mattered most to secure victory.
A good start was produced from Swiatek as she broke for a 2-0 lead but Bejlek had made her intentions clear as well.
Some aggressive winners were produced from the 20 year-old as she immediately broke Swiatek back.
Although Bejlek had good defensive qualities, she couldn’t match Swiatek’s attacking quality and aggressive intent with the Pole reasserting dominance in the match as she took a 4-1 lead.
Towards the end of the set Swiatek once again produced more unforced errors and struggled to control Bejlek’s heavy ball.
Another break was secured from Bejlek but Swiatek regrouped to break straight back and take the opening set.
At the start of the second set Bejlek produced more winners as she tested Swiatek’s nerve in the longer rallies and the variety was causing the former world number one problems.
The third seed eventually prevailed through the opening service game before breaking for a 2-0 lead.
However, some more unforced errors and double faults from Swiatek allowed Bejlek back into the match on more than one occasion as she managed to get back on serve in the third and seventh games.
Swiatek showed her class and broke back immediately on both occasions and raced through the latter stages to reach the third round.
The Pole will now face either compatriot Magda Linette who she lost to in Miami just before the clay court season or Jelena Ostapenko who Swiatek has lost to on all six occasions that they have faced each other.
