Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have confirmed their withdrawal from the Mutua Madrid Masters.
Djokovic suffered a shoulder injury at Indian Wells and withdrew from the two Masters 1000 events in Miami and Monte-Carlo.
There was hope that Djokovic may play the event in Madrid in much faster conditions in comparison to the other clay court events.
However, Djokovic hasn’t been able to recover in time in what is a big blow to his Roland Garros preparations.
Meanwhile Alcaraz suffered a wrist injury in Barcelona and was hoping to return in Madrid but that will not be happening as announced on X, “There are some news that are incredibly hard to share. Madrid is home, one of the most special places on my calendar, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row,” Alcaraz stated.
“It hurts especially not to be in front of my people, in a tournament that means so much. Thank you for the unwavering affection, and I hope we see each other soon.”
The Serb will now be hoping to recover in time for the next Masters 1000 event which takes place in Rome.
Djokovic will be chasing a record-shattering 25th Grand Slam title when he plays Roland Garros which starts on the 24th of May.
