Carlos Alcaraz has praised his composure and had some positive words for Joao Fonseca after the Spaniard reached the third round in Miami.
The world number one came through a big test on Friday night as he defeated Joao Fonseca 6-4 6-4 to reach the third round.
There were some moments where Fonseca threatened but ultimately Alcaraz’s quality came through as he won in straight sets.
After the match Alcaraz praised his serving under pressure as he saved all three break points that he faced, “I think I was really good in crucial moments,” the Spaniard told the ATP website.
“I was really good since the beginning until the last ball. I know how good Joao is, and that’s why I was really focused, every point, every shot. I’m just happy to stay calm, to stay positive in those moments. Most of the games, I just served pretty well, which was a really great weapon today for me.”
As for Fonseca, the Brazilian has gone toe-to-toe with the world’s top two in two consecutive Masters 1000 events after he lost to Jannik Sinner in two tiebreaks at Indian Wells.
After the defeating the 19 year-old, Alcaraz said that Fonseca has a bright future ahead of him and will only learn from facing the world’s best players, “For him, playing toe to toe with us, I think he and his team are going to get great feedback to know what he should improve in the future,” Alcaraz stated.
“I think he has everything, great shots, a lot of things to improve, but for sure he’s going to do it. Back-to-back tournaments playing the No. 1 and No. 2 in the world I think is going to be really helpful for him.”
Next up for Alcaraz will be 32nd seed Sebastian Korda with the Spaniard currently leading the head-to-head 4-1.
