Poland are into a third consecutive United Cup final after defeating USA 2-1 in the semi-finals.
Brand new champions of the United Cup will be named on Sunday as Poland knocked out defending champions USA.
It started with Hubert Hurkacz putting Poland 1-0 up with victory over Taylor Fritz in two tiebreaks.
Hurkacz had only just returned to tennis from a long break after suffering some complicated injuries but has returned with a strong showing in the United Cup.
After his big win over Fritz Hurkacz admitted it was a great feeling to record another incredible win in the competition, “Obviously playing Taylor is such a big challenge and it’s a very difficult match, especially this court, it’s quite fast. He’s serving very powerfully. Also, his forehand is really big, so if you leave anything short, he’s going to come after it,” Hurkacz was quoted by the ATP website as saying to Jim Courier in his on-court interview.
“I felt like I played actually quite solid myself. I tried to be more aggressive. Actually during my time off I was watching some of my past matches and I was listening to your commentary. It’s a good help for players, as well!”
However, Poland’s lead was cut short as Iga Swiatek lost to Coco Gauff for a second consecutive year in the competition.
A 6-4 6-2 win for Gauff put America level in what was an efficient display by the American in another good win to kickstart her season.
After the match, Gauff claims that it wasn’t as straightforward as the scoreline suggests, “I didn’t the let the opportunities that I had on the first two times I had match points get away from me,” the American explained.
“She played well. Maybe there was one error on the backhand, but after that, she played the better tennis, but I knew that how I was playing the whole match I would get it done.”
That meant the tie would be decided by the mixed doubles which saw Katrazyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski defeat Coco Gauff and Christian Harrison 7-6(5) 6-3 to seal Poland’s place in the final.
It means there will be a new name on the trophy as Poland will take on Switzerland in Sunday’s final.
Switzerland defeated Belgium 2-1 after Belinda Bencic and Jakub Paul won their fourth consecutive mixed doubles match of the tournament.
