Jasmine Paolini continued her recent winning streak over Coco Gauff by prevailing 2-6 6-4 6-3 in Cincinnati.
The Italian has recovered to her first round exit in Canada in fine fashion as she is into the final four in Ohio.
However, the match wasn’t easy against the former champion Gauff after the Italian rolled her ankle at the start of the final set.
In the end Paolini came through to reach the semi-finals and securing her third victory over the American this season.
Speaking after the match Paolini admitted it was a tough match in Ohio, “It was so tough,” Paolini told the WTA website.
“At the beginning, I was just running and trying to put the ball inside the court … but after a little bit, I started to feel better the ball. I stayed there every point, I tried to fight every point, and it worked.”
Now Paolini is into the semi-finals and will face Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday for a place in the final.
The Italian is very aware of Kudermetova’s strengths ahead of the clash, “She’s a great player, big serve and big weapons,” Paolini explained to the WTA website.
“It’s always tough to play against her … this one is going to be a different story. She’s playing really well, I’m happy with my game here, so let’s see what I can do and hopefully it’s going to be a good one.”
As for Gauff, the American only has four wins since winning the Roland Garros title and will hope that a return to Grand Slam tennis will elevate her game to new levels.
Gauff won the US Open in 2023 and is searching for a second US Open title when the tournament takes place on the 24th of August.
