The quarterfinals in singles begin on Tuesday.

We are down to eight players remaining in each of the singles draws.  In ladies’ singles, we are guaranteed a new Wimbledon champion, as none of the remaining women have even reached a previous final at The Championships.  In gentlemen’s singles, we winners of the last six Wimbledons are still remaining: Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz plays his quarterfinal on Day 9, against the last remaining British singles hope, Cameron Norrie.  Tuesday’s other men’s singles quarterfinal sees US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz take on two-time Major semifinalist Karen Khachanov

In the ladies’ singles quarterfinals, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka and WTA 1000 champion Amanda Anisimova are one round away from a blockbuster semifinal.  However, both must first advance beyond cagey WTA veterans: Sabalenka plays Laura Siegemund, while Anisimova plays Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Throughout the tournament, this preview will analyze the day’s four most prominent matches, while highlighting the other notable matches on the schedule.  Tuesday’s play begins at 11:00am local time.

Taylor Fritz (5) vs. Karen Khachanov (17) – 1:00pm on No.1 Court

Neither man came into this grass court season with much confidence.  Fritz was a modest 17-10 on the year, while Khachanov was just 14-13.  Yet both have rediscovered their form on grass.  Taylor is 12-1 on this surface, with a pair of titles (Stuttgart, Eastbourne), while Karen is 8-2, having advanced to the semifinals of Halle.

This a sixth Major quarterfinal for Fritz, and his third at Wimbledon, yet his only quarterfinal victory at this level came last summer in New York.  A year ago in the same round of this same event, he lost in five sets to Lorenzo Musetti.  Taylor has endured an extremely tough draw to this stage, requiring five sets to outlast two big-serving threats in Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo, before receiving a mid-match retirement in the last round from a banged-up Jordan Thompson.

Khachanov benefitted from a much easier draw, which did not include a seeded player, yet also required five sets in back-to-back matches.  This is also his sixth Major quarterfinal, and he is 2-3 in this round, though he’s 0-1 at The Championships.  Three years ago, he squandered a two-sets-to-one lead in the quarterfinals here against Denis Shapovalov.

So which player will overcome their previous Wimbledon scar tissue to achieve their first semifinal at SW19?  Fritz has been the far better performer across the past two seasons, and is currently on an eight-match winning streak.  However, he’s 0-2 against Khachanov, who defeated the American twice on a hard court, though those matches both occurred over five years ago.

Based on Taylor recent grass court success, and considering five of his 10 career titles have come on this surface, I favor Fritz to reach the semifinals.

Aryna Sabalenka (1) vs. Laura Siegemund – 1:30pm on Centre Court

Sabalenka is a significant favorite to win this title for the first time.  However, we’ve seen her suffer some surprising upsets at Majors throughout her career, and she already lost two painful Major finals this season.  So I am curious to see if the pressure of being such a big favorite negatively impacts her play this week.

This is an 11th Major quarterfinal in as many appearances for Aryna, and she’s a superb 9-1 in her last 10 quarterfinals at this level.  By contrast, this is only a second Major quarterfinal in singles for Siegemund, and prior to this fortnight, she was just 2-5 lifetime in the main draw of The Championships.

Both of these players are yet to drop a set, but seven of Sabalenka’s eight sets have been quite tight, with half of them going to 7-5 or to a tiebreak.  Siegemund has actually advanced much more comfortably, and has already taken out two seeded players, including Australian Open champ Madison Keys.

Yet while Laura’s grit and variety can be rather bothersome, Aryna’s power should dominate the day.  I would be quite surprised to see Sabalenka upset on Tuesday, especially since she’s 2-0 against Siegemund, and won both of those matches comfortably.

Amanda Anisimova (13) vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova – Second on No.1 Court

Anisimova won a nervy, big-hitting affair in the last round against Linda Noskova, to achieve her third Slam quarterfinal, and her second at The All-England Club.  Back in 2022, she lost in this round to Simona Halep.  But three years later, after taking an extended break from the sport to focus on her mental health, Amanda is a more confident and comfortable player.  With a 29-12 record on the season, she will debut inside the world’s top 10 on Monday.

This is a 10th Major quarterfinal for Pavlyuchenkova, who notably defeated Naomi Osaka two rounds ago.  Yet unfortunately, much like her Tokyo Olympics mixed doubles gold medal partner Andrey Rublev, Major quarterfinals have been a huge stumbling block in the career of the Russian.  Anastasia is 1-9 in this round, with her only victory coming just a few months before those Tokyo Olympics, when she went all the way to the final in Paris.  Her only prior quarterfinal at Wimbledon took place nine years ago, when she lost in straights to Serena Williams.

The American leads their head-to-head 3-0, which includes two hard court victories during 2024.  And with her strong serving and formidable backhand, Anisimova should be favored to achieve her second Major semifinal.

Cameron Norrie vs. Carlos Alcaraz (2) – Second on Centre Court

Alcaraz continues to complicate matters for himself, with dips in his play during many of his matches throughout this season.  He’s been pushed beyond three sets in three of his four matches thus far at SW19, yet as he usually does, has still found a way to win rather comfortably.  Carlitos came back from a set down on Sunday against Andrey Rublev, to extend his Wimbledon winning streak to 18, and his 2025 winning streak to 22.

Norrie is appearing in a Slam quarterfinal for the just the second time, both of which have occurred at his home Slam.  Three years ago in this round, he came from two-sets-to-one down to beat David Goffin in five.  This year, his path included a four-set victory over 12th-seeded Frances Tiafoe, and a five-set victory in the last round over Nicolas Jarry.

Alcaraz is 4-2 against Norrie, though the Brit did take two of their last three encounters.  One of those came three years ago on a hard court in Cincinnati, while the other came two years ago on a clay court in Rio de Janeiro.  So Cam has defeated Carlitos in both fast and slow conditions.

However, it would be quite shocking if he can upset the two-time defending champion on Tuesday, even if Alcaraz suffers another mid-match loss of form.  There’s just not much in Norrie’ game that can truly challenge the explosive power and speed of the second seed, especially in the best-of-five format where Carlitos excels.

Other Notable Matches on Tuesday:

Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic (1) vs. Hugo Nys and Edouard Roger-Vasselin (10) – This is a men’s doubles quarterfinal.  Arevalo and Pavic won Roland Garros a year ago, and have claimed four Masters 1000 titles within the past 12 months.  Nys and Roger-Vasselin are a new partnership this season, but they have reached the quarterfinals at all three Majors this year.

Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens (8) vs. Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe (2) – This is a women’s doubles quarterfinal.  Dabrowski and Routliffe won the US Open two summers ago, and were finalists here last summer.  Mertens is vying for her fifth consecutive Wimbledon semifinal in women’s doubles, and with a fourth different partner.  Kudermetova was a runner-up here back in 2021, when she and Elena Vesnina lost the final to Mertens and Su-wei Hsieh.

Joe Salisbury and Luisa Stefani vs. Marcelo Arevalo and Shuai Zhang (2) – This is a mixed doubles semifinal.  All four players are two matches away from winning their first Wimbledon title in mixed doubles.  On Monday, Salisbury and Stefani upset defending champions Jan Zielinski and Su-wei Hsieh.
