Bianca Andreescu has been forced to delay the start of her season after undergoing an operation to treat stomach pain.
The former Canadian world No.4 has undergone an emergency appendectomy which is a procedure to remove the appendix when it is infected. It is more commonly known as appendicitis. Andreescu had originally planned to play her first tournament of 2025 later this month at the Merida Open in Mexico but will now be sidelined from action until the clay season starts.
“I unexpectedly started experiencing some sharp pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy,” Andreescu said. “The surgery went smoothly, and I’m on the road to recovery. My plan is to be back on the court for the clay season, stronger than ever.”
Andreescu has been hindered by various injury setbacks. Last year, she returned to the Tour at the French Open after a nine-month absence due to a back injury. A month after her return, she reached the final of the Rosmalen Open but since then she has struggled for wins. In her eight most recent tournaments played, she has only won back-to-back matches in two of them.
Andreescu rose to prominence in 2019 during a standout year that saw her win WTA 100O titles in Indian Wells and Canada before she claimed her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. Since then, she has struggled to regain her form on the Tour after spending large chunks of time away from the sport due to various health issues. Missing the entire 2020 season due to injury.
Currently 130th in the world, Andreescu hasn’t been ranked inside the top 100 since the first week of January last year. She is the first and only Canadian player to have won a major singles title in the Open Era.
It has yet to be confirmed which clay event Andreescu plans to begin her comeback at.
