Matteo Berrettini beat Hugo Gaston 7-5 6-3 in 1 hour and 21 minutes in the final of the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel to clinch his second consecutive ATP Tour title following his triumph in Gstaad last week. Berrettiini has not dropped a set in his past ten matches.
Berrettini fired eight aces and won 80% of his first serve points. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist earned a crucial break to take a 6-5 lead in the first set before serving out the first set at 15 in the 12thgame.
Berrettini raced out to a 5-2 lead with a double break in the fifth and seventh games. Gaston pulled one break back in the seventh game for 3-5, but Berrettini recovered to earn another break in the ninth game on his first match point.
Berrettini won three titles in Marrakesh, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel and reached the final in Stuttgart this season and has a record of 21 wins to 5 defeats. He is one of the three players to win three titles this season, alongside his compatriot Jannik Sinner (4) and Carlos Alcaraz (3).
“I was happy that I had a double break. In tennis, you never know. A little bit of tension, he played great tennis. I was focused, I kept doing what I was doing well, hitting the ball well. I hit the ball aggressive in important moments”, said Berrettini.Berrettini has moved up to world number 40 in the ATP Ranking.
