Iga Swiatek won a tough opening round against Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4 6-4 to reach the second round at Wimbledon.
The former Roland Garros champion won in straight sets against an awkward opponent to reach the second round.
Swiatek will now play either Marie Bouzkova or Vera Zvonareva in the next round.
It was Swiatek who made the best start as she used her aggressive ground-strokes mixed with variety to get the break in the first game.
The world number nine did her best to make life difficult for Hsieh as she neutralised the points and looked to shorten the rallies.
Although Hsieh used her unpredictable shot selection to her advantage, Swiatek remained composed and showed supreme confidence on serve using a variety of angles.
After only conceding one break point on serve the former Wimbledon juniors champion sealed the first set in 37 minutes.
In the second set both players broke as Hsieh started to mix up her returns testing Swiatek’s ability to create aggressive shots from different paces.
However as has been the case since the pandemic, Swiatek problem-solved her way to another break of serve in the fifth game of the second set.
It was a professional performance against an under-par Hsieh as she held her serves with efficiency to seal an impressive victory.
Next for Swiatek will be Marie Bouzkova or Vera Zvonareva.
In other results there were mixed fortunes for British players as Katie Boulter set up a clash with Aryna Sabalenka with a 6-7(6) 6-3 6-4 win over Danielle Lao.
However Katie Swan was knocked by 23rd seed Madison Keys 6-3 6-4.
