Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sets up a second round clash against Karen Khachanov in Washington

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga scored his first win at the Citi Open in Washington when he beat New York Open finalist Brayden Schnur 6-4 7-6 (7-2). Tsonga set up a second round match against Karen Khachanov.

The Frenchman hit 18 aces and hit 35 winners to 13 unforced errors. Schnur fended off three of the four break points. Both players stayed neck and neck before Tsonga clinched the ti-break 7-2 to improve his win-loss record to 22-12.

Bjorn Fratangelo battled past Ivo Karlovic 6-4 6-7 (14-16) 7-6 (7-5) after 2 hours and 32 minutes. Fratangelo did not drop his serve and won one point more than Karlovic who took a 5-2 lead in the tie-break of the third set.

Karlovic saved five match points in the tie-break of the second set before clinching it 16-14. Fratangelo fought back from 2-5 down by winning five consecutive points and closed out the match with a forehand winner on the 12th point.  Fratangelo set up a second round match against Danil Medevedev.

Hubert Hurkacz cruised past Donald Young 6-1 6-4 in 63 minutes to clinch his 16th win of the season. Hurkacz saved six of the seven break points and broke serve four times. The Polish player got the most crucial break at 2-2 in the second set.

Young fended off a match point at 3-5 before Hurkacz closed out the match with a hold of serve in the 10th game.

US Tommy Paul beat his compatriot Denis Kudla 6-0 6-4 to set up a second round match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Paul broke serve five times and dropped his serve only once. Paul saved two break points in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Kudla broke back at 3-4, but Paul broke serve in the tenth game, when he hit a backhand down the line winner.

This year’s Newport finalist Alexander Bublik beat Bradley Khan 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 after 1 hour and 27 minutes. Klahn wasted three set points on return in the 10th and 12th game before losing a close tie-break by 7-5. Klahn went down a break in the third game but he bounced back by breaking twice in the fourth and eighth game to win the second set 6-3.

Adrian Mannarino beat Ilya Ivashka 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 to secure his spot in the second round where he will face Kevin Anderson.
