Bianca Andreescu has returned to training ahead of the second grand slam of the year at Roland Garros.

The Canadian hasn’t played since her fourth round retirement against Anett Kontaveit at the Miami Open due to an ongoing shoulder injury.

Despite pulling out of next week’s Mutua Madrid Open, Andreescu has resumed her training ahead of the second grand slam of the year in Paris.

Speaking to SportsNet Canada, Andreescu’s coach Sylvain Bruneau is hopeful of a return sooner rather than later, “It’s been a long break so we need to go slowly and surely and smartly about it, which is what he intend to do,” he said in Montreal. “Then hopefully we’ll build over the next couple weeks and get her ready to play and perform in Paris.”

Preparations will pick up for the Indian Wells when she travels to Mallorca to practice at the Rafa Nadal Academy. Although playing in Rome looks unlikely, a tournament just before the French Open in Nurnberg or Strasbourg looks likely.

However even though she hasn’t practiced much before the French Open, Bruneau thinks that his player has a good chance to do some damage on the clay, “It suits her game really, really well,” he explained.

“She’s able to do the spins, the angles and variations. So I think she’s going to be very effective. I think we’re going to just go into the clay-court season and hope that she stays healthy.”

Bianca Andreescu is currently 23in the world after winning 31 matches on the WTA Tour in 2019.
