Multiple media sources have reported that Bernard Tomic has been offered a hefty sum to participate in the Australian version of I’m a celebrity….get me out of here.
The 25-year-old experienced a dismal 2017 season that saw him win back-to-back matches at just three tournaments. Resulting in him falling down the rankings to 140th in the world. On Thursday it was confirmed that Tomic would not be awarded a wildcard to play at the upcoming Australian Open, meaning that he will have to enter the qualifying draw next week.
“He’s not going to get a wild card. He’d have to go through qualifying,” said tournament director Craig Tiley.
“Qualifying starts next week … and I would hope that Bernie would want to put himself in a position to play, but he’s indicated that that’s likely not going to be the case.”
Yet to play a match in 2018, reports have now broken that Tomic has been invited to take part in the reality TV series I’m a celebrity. Broadcasted by Network Ten Australia, the programme sees contestants conduct a series of tasks whilst living in a jungle located in Africa.
According to The Herald Sun, Tomic has bragged to other players are being asked to participate in the program. Allegedly saying that he has been offered a ‘seven-figure sum’ to take part. Although The Sydney Morning Herald has estimated the participation fee at AUS$600,000.
Filming for the show is set to start shortly, but Network Ten has refused to comment about who is taking part.
“There was a lot of misinformation,” a spokesman for the network said.
Former world No.17 Tomic, who hasn’t played a competitive match since a Slovakian Challenger event in November, is yet to respond to media questions about the rumours.
