Day 4 at The Championships features the conclusion of the second round in ladies’ and gentlemen’s singles.

After surviving a stern test in the first round from Taylor Townsend, Iga Swiatek’s title defense gets no easier on Thursday.  In a battle of former World No.1’s, Swiatek plays two-time Major finalist Karolina Pliskova, who has returned to good form after missing over a year of competition due to injury.

Other WTA second round action sees two-time Major champion Elena Rybakina take on Katy McNally, who was the only player to take a set off Swiatek during her title run a year ago.  And Amanda Anisimova, a two-time Major finalist during 2025, faces 2020 Australian Open champ Sofia Kenin.

ATP singles action on Thursday is headlined by a few appetizing matchups featuring players who have seen their rankings drop due to injury.  2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini goes up against French phenom Arthur Fils, in a matchup where both players have experienced multiple injury layoffs of late.  And Grigor Dimitrov, who suffered a heartbreaking injury a year ago on Centre Court while holding a two-sets-to-live lead over eventual champion Jannik Sinner, plays 2025 Miami Open champ Jakub Mensik.

Here’s a rundown of the most notable matches on Day 4 (in chronological order, all times local):

Karolina Pliskova vs. Iga Swiatek (3) – 1:30pm on Centre Court

On Tuesday, Swiatek struck nine double faults, and 11 more unforced errors than winners, so she’ll need to quickly clean up her game.  Pliskova missed about 16 months of action after injuring her foot at the 2024 US Open.  Despite that extended layoff, she’s now 20-9 since returning this season, and earned six grass court wins during the month of June.  The 34-year-old was the runner-up here back in 2021, yet outside of that run, is just 13-12 lifetime at Wimbledon.

Swiatek leads their head-to-head 3-0, though they haven’t played in nearly three years, and they’ve never played on grass.

Amanda Anisimova (6) vs. Sofia Kenin – Second on No.2 Court

An ongoing left wrist injury caused Anisimova to miss almost all of the clay court season, so she’s only 15-8 on the year.  However, last year’s runner-up looked rather sharp in the first round, losing only five games.  Kenin also won her opening round in straights, but that was only her fourth match win of 2026, to go with 13 losses.  The former World No.4 is now ranked outside the world’s top 100, and her seven career wins at SW19 are the least she owns at any Major.

While Kenin claimed their only prior meeting at tour level, they only played seven games before Anisimova retired from that match.

Valentin Royer vs. Alexander Zverev (2) – Second on No.1 Court

Zverev played a tight four-setter against another Alexander (Blockx) to extend his Major winning streak to eight matches.  Royer is a 25-year-old Frenchman who also won in four sets on Tuesday, but that was only his second-ever main draw win on this surface, and he is 0-3 lifetime in the second round of Slams.  Last fall in Shanghai, Zverev defeated Royer 6-4, 6-4.

Matteo Berrettini vs. Arthur Fils (20) – Second on Centre Court

Berrettini survived an extremely tight, high-quality four-setter on Tuesday night against Stan Wawrinka, in a match decided by four tiebreaks, one of which includes 34 points.  That was Matteo’s first match since retiring from the Roland Garros quarterfinals due to a hip injury.  Fils missed his home Slam altogether due to his own ongoing hip issue.  The 22-year-old’s straight-set victory on Tuesday over Raphael Collignon was his first match since early May.  However, Fils was enjoying a great season ahead of that injury recurrence, with 22 match wins within a three-month period.

Two years ago in Tokyo, Fils beat Berrettini despite losing the only set they completed, as the oft-injured Italian was forced to retire due to an abdominal injury.

Jakub Mensik (15) vs. Grigor Dimitrov (WC) – Third on No.1 Court

Mensik seems to have a flare for the dramatic.  He endured two grueling five-setters on his way to his Major semifinal debut a month ago in Paris, then lost his only grass court tuneup match to Adrian Mannarino in a final-set tiebreak, before competing in another final-set tiebreak to prevail on Tuesday over a British wild card.  Dimitrov missed almost all of the rest of last season after his aforementioned injury on Centre Court a year ago, and is just 5-9 at tour level during 2026.  It’s no wonder Grigor became quite emotional after his straight-set win in the first round.

Mensik is 2-0 against Dimitrov, with both matches taking place during 2024, and both matches going the distance.

Caty McNally vs. Elena Rybakina (2) – Third on Centre Court

Rybakina defeated Lois Boisson in three sets on Tuesday, bringing her Wimbledon record to a strong 22-4.  24-year-old McNally just made her top 50 debut, and she’s now 12-4 on grass at all levels since the start of last year’s Wimbledon.  These players have split two previous encounters, with Rybakina winning their most recent one in three sets, which took place last September in Beijing.
