It isn’t very often that an athlete can take maternity leave and still become world No.1, but that is what Serena Williams has done.

For the eighth time in her career the 35-year-old has reached the top of the WTA rankings in what is her 317th week in that position. Her stint at the top could be short-lived depending on Angelique Kerber’s progression in this week’s Stuttgart Open. Nevertheless, the latest development comes after what has been a life changing past week.

Last Wednesday, a Snapchat post from Williams indicated that she was pregnant before her agent officially confirmed the news a few hours later. The announcement brought her praise from numerous members of the world of sport when it emerged that she was pregnant whilst winning her 23rd grand slam title at the Australian Open.

It is a fairy-tale scenario for the world No.1, who will also marry her partner Alex Ohanian later this year. She could be forgiven for wanting to end her career on a high, but the age-defying Williams isn’t ready for the final chapter in her career.

Taking to Instagram, Williams posted a touching message to her unborn child. The post celebrated her rise to the top as well as Ohanian’s birthday. In it, she also talks about her child being in her  player’s box when she returns to the tour.

“I can’t wait to meet you. I can’t wait for you to join the players box next year. But most importantly, I am so happy to share being number one in the world with you…. once again today.” Williams wrote.

Set to turn 36 in September, Williams is the second oldest player in the top-100 after sister Venus. If she was to triumph in future grand slams, the American would join an elite group of players. Only two women have ever won a major title as a mother. Evonne Goolagong at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships and Kim Clijsters at the 2009 US Open.

It is a daunting prospect and perhaps one too far away to think about. Still, Williams’ career has been one where she has met and exceeded expectations. Given the growing trend of players playing later in their career, a Williams comeback in 2018 seems almost inevitable.
