Andy Murray is likely to miss Great Britain’s upcoming Davis Cup tie as he is set to undergo tests on his elbow.
The world No.1 recently withdrew from the Miami Open, citing a right elbow injury without providing further details. In a brief post uploaded to his Facebook account on March 20th, Murray stated that he has switched his focus towards the clay court season.
It has now emerged that the focus has been replaced by uncertainty. According to the Associated Press, the Wimbledon Champion will fly to London on Wednesday night to seek a evaluation of his elbow to identify what the exact problem is.
Murray hasn’t played a match since his shock second round loss to Vasek Pospisil in Indian Wells. This season the Brit has endured a mixed performance on the tour. At the Australian Open he crashed out in the fourth round to Mischa Zverev. Then in his next tournament at the Dubai Tennis Championships, Murray won his 45th title on the ATP Tour.
On top of the elbow injury, reports have said that Murray is also ‘under the weather.’ Earlier this year he was hit with a bout of Shingles, which was first diagnosed by his mother-in-law.
“We were having dinner and I said, ‘This is really irritating me’ and she was like, ‘Pull your pants down and show me; it might be shingles’ and I was like ‘OK.’ Murray revealed last month.
“And then the next day I got the doctor and she was right.”
Due to his recent problems, the world No.1 remains an unlikely choice for Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie next month. The British team will play away to France on the clay between April 7th-9th. It will be the second consecutive tie Murray has missed after skipping his country’s first round clash against Canada.
Murray’s setback comes as he approaches the crucial second part of the season, where he will have a big amount of points to defend. Last year the 29-year-old reached 11 ATP finals between May-November, winning eight titles.
Despite the absence, Murray continues to have a strong lead in the Emirates rankings. World No.2 Novak Djokovic has also withdrawn from Miami due to an elbow injury. Murray currently has a 3090-point lead over the Serbian.
