The round of 16 concludes on Monday in Paris.

Day 9 is headlined by a blockbuster clash between a pair of four-time Major champions: Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka.  Plus, another Major champ, Madison Keys, takes on Diana Shnaider.  And in the absence of Jannik Sinner, there are still three Italian men playing their fourth round matches on Monday: Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, and Matteo Arnaldi.

Here’s a rundown of the most notable matches on Day 9 (in chronological order, all times local):

Flavio Cobolli (10) vs. Zachary Svajda – 11:00am on Court Philippe-Chatrier

Cobolli is the only man to advance through three rounds without the loss of a set.  The 24-year-old now looks to achieve his second Major quarterfinal, after first doing so last summer at Wimbledon.

In a first week full of big stories, Svajda has been one of the most inspiring ones.  His father passed away last October after a battle with cancer, and Saturday would have been his father’s birthday.  Saturday also happened to be the day when the 23-year-old American made his third round debut at a Major, and with his father weighing heavily on his mind, Zachary upset Francisco Cerundolo in five sets.  The 23-year-old American collapsed to the court in tears upon winning match point.  Prior to this fortnight, Svajda owned only one career clay court victory at tour level.

Two years ago on a hard court in Delray Beach, Cobolli defeatd Svajda in three sets.

Madison Keys (19) vs. Diana Shnaider (25) – Second on Court Suzanne-Lenglen

Keys prevailed 7-5 in the third on Saturday after a tough battle with Victoria Mboko.  This is the 2025 Australian Open champion’s sixth time into the second week of Roland Garros.  Shnaider is yet to drop a set, despite arriving in Paris with a modest record of 11-6 on the year.  This matches her best-ever result at a Major, after reaching the round of 16 two years ago in New York.

Keys is 3-0 against Shnaider, though their last two meetings went this distance.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo vs. Matteo Berrettini – Third on Court Suzanne-Lenglen

Both of these men endured a fifth-set tiebreak in the last round to advance.  Berrettini played for over five hours, and went all the way to 15-13 in the final-set tiebreak, to outlast Francisco Comesana.  He saved two match points in the process, and this is the 2021 Wimbledon finalist’s first time in the second week of a Major in nearly four years.

Cerundolo one-upped the length of Berrettini’s match by playing for five hours and 58 minutes, the third longest match in the history of the tournament, to defeat Martin Landaluce.  And the younger Cerundolo brother somehow accomplished that just a round after upsetting World No.1 Jannik Sinner, in a match where Juan Manual was down 6-3, 6-2, 5-1.  The 24-year-old was 2-5 previously at Majors.

This will be the first career meeting between the big-serving Italian and the left-handed clay court specialist.

Felix Auger-Aliassime (4) vs. Alejandro Tabilo – Not Before 3:30pm on Court Philippe-Chatrier

Auger-Aliassime has required 13 out of a possible 15 sets to advance to the round of 16 of Roland Garros for the third time.  However, he’s yet to advance farther at this event.  On Saturday night, FAA came back from a set down against Brandon Nakashima, which was his third consecutive come-from-behind victory.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Tabilo came back from a set down to crush the French hopes for 17-year-old Moise Kouame.  A round earlier, the 28-year-old Chilean received a walkover from an injured Valentin Vacherot, on the way to his debut in the fourth round of a Major.

Last fall in Shanghai on a hard court, Auger-Aliassime defeated Tabilo 6-3, 6-3.

Frances Tiafoe (19) vs. Matteo Arnaldi – Last on Court Suzanne-Lenglen

Tiafoe has prevailed in back-to-back five-setters, against Hubert Hurkacz and Jaime Faria, coming from two-sets-to-love down against Faria.  The American was a quarterfinalist here a year ago.

On Saturday, Arnaldi played at an extraordinary level during a fifth-set tiebreak against Raphael Collignon, to reach the third round of a Major for the third time.  The 25-year-old has battled multiple injuries across the past few seasons, and has seen his ranking drop out of the world’s top 100.

These players have split two prior encounters, with Tiafoe winning a five-setter two years ago on the grass of Wimbledon, and Arnaldi winning in straights last year on the clay of Madrid.

Aryna Sabalenka (1) vs. Naomi Osaka (16) – Not Before 8:15pm on Court Philippe Chatrier

Sabalenka has comfortably reached this stage without losing a set, bringing her 2026 record to 30-3.  She now vies to reach the quarterfinals or better at Roland Garros for the fourth year in a row.

This is Osaka’s first time advancing this far in Paris, after a tough three-set win over 18-year-old Iva Jovic.  Naomi now vies for just her second Major quarterfinal since winning her fourth Major in January of 2021.

Sabalenka leads their head-to-head 2-1, which includes a three-set victory during this clay court season in Madrid.  Osaka’s victory over Sabalenka came nearly eight years ago at the US Open, on the way to her first Major title.
