Second round singles action concludes on Thursday in Paris.

The most intriguing matches on Day 5 feature recent top-ranked players who have seen their rankings drop, leading to some high-profile matchups early in the draws.  Former World No.1 Naomi Osaka faces 2024 Olympic silver medalist and former World No.17 Donna Vekic.  In a match between two former top 10 players, Frances Tiafoe takes on Hubert Hurkacz.  And current World No.25 Arthur Rinderknech goes up against former World No.6 Matteo Berrettini.

Plus, reigning Major champions Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff will all play their second round matches.

Here’s a rundown of the most notable matches on Day 5 (in chronological order, all times local):

Donna Vekic vs. Naomi Osaka (16) – 11:00am on Court Simonne-Mathieu

Osaka survived a tough straight-setter in the first round against Laura Siegemund.  The four-time Major champ now looks to advance beyond the second round of Roland Garros for the first time since 2019.  Vekic’s silver medal was achieved less than two years ago on these same grounds, but she’s had a losing record at tour level since last season, and now finds herself ranked 72nd in the world.  Osaka is 2-0 against Vekic, with a straight-set victory 10 years ago at the Australian Open, and a three-set victory seven years ago in Stuttgart on clay.

Jannik Sinner (1) vs. Juan Manuel Cerundolo – 12:00pm on Court Philippe-Chatrier

Sinner’s straightforward and straight-set victory on Tuesday was his 30th consecutive match win.  Juan Manuel is the younger brother of Francisco Cerundolo, and he is on the verge of cracking the world’s top 50 after winning a clay court Challenger tournament earlier this month.  Three years ago in the first round of Wimbledon, Sinner defeated Cerundolo 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

Hubert Hurkacz vs. Frances Tiafoe (19) – Second on Court 14

Tiafoe was a quarterfinalist here a year ago, after previously holding a Roland Garros record of just 4-9.  He’s a modest 5-3 on clay courts this season.  Hurkacz missed the entire second half of 2025 due to right knee surgery, and is just 9-10 at tour level since returning.  However, Hubi did reach the final of a Challenger on clay a few weeks ago.  Their head-to-head is tied at 3-3, with all six of those prior encounters occurring on a hard court.

Coco Gauff (4) vs. Mayar Sherif (Q) – Third on Court Suzanne-Lenglen

Gauff dropped just four games in the first match of her title defense, and she hasn’t lost in the second round of a Major since 2021.  Sherif is a 30-year-old qualifier who has never advanced beyond the second round of a Major.  Three summers ago in Cincinnati, Gauff defeated Sherif 6-2, 6-2.

Aryna Sabalenka (1) vs. Elsa Jacquemot – Third on Court Philippe-Chatrier

Even more impressively than Gauff, Sabalenka hasn’t lost in the second round of a Major since 2020.  Jacquemot is a 23-year-old Frenchwoman who reached the third round here a year ago, but she’s gone a dismal 3-13 during 2026.

Arthur Rinderknech (22) vs. Matteo Berrettini – Not Before 8:15pm on Court Philippe Chatrier

Their only previous meeting brings up some painful memories for Berrettini.  Midway through their second round contest at the 2023 US Open, the Italian suffered a serious ankle injury, forcing him to miss six months of action.  In a career plagued by injuries, this is Matteo’s first appearance at Roland Garros since advancing to the quarterfinals back in 2021.  Rinderknech recently peaked at a ranking of No.24, mostly thanks to his run to the Shanghai Masters final last fall.  But the 30-year-old Frenchman is just 11-11 on the year, and just 3-6 lifetime at his home Slam.
