Grigor Dimitrov has admitted he needs to work on his consistency as he prepares to take on Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells.
The Bulgarian produced a good performance in a tight three set victory over Terence Atmane to begin his Indian Wells campaign.
It was a 6-4 5-7 6-4 victory although Dimitrov had opportunities to win the match in straight sets, Atmane’s clutch serving ensured that the match went the distance.
However, Dimitrov held his nerve to secure a big win and reach the second round at Indian Wells.
After the match Dimitrov said he needs to work on his consistency but was satisfied with his day’s work, “I think I started the match really well but it was just difficult to maintain a solid level,” Dimitrov explained to the ATP website.
“I knew that I would get a few chances at some point, so I was just holding onto those moments. It could have gone either way, but I was able to stay very strong in the most important moments.”
Now a big test awaits as Dimitrov will take on the world number one and Australian Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in the second round.
Ahead of the blockbuster clash Dimitrov has said that he isn’t focusing on Alcaraz and is only focused on his own performance, “I’m always looking on my side of the net,” Dimitrov told the ATP website.
“At this point in my career, I’m almost always going to look at my side of the net and what I want to do. If I win, great. If I lose, great again. This is the mindset that I want to adopt a lot more.”
Heading into Saturday’s clash Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 4-2 with their last meeting being at last year’s Indian Wells where the Spaniard only lost two games on his way to victory.
