Venus Williams will play in the Australian Open 28 years after making her debut after being handed a wildcard into next month’s main draw.

The former world No.1 is a two-time runner-up at Melbourne Park, but hasn’t played there since 2021, when she was beaten in the second round by Sara Errani. At the age of 45, Williams will become the oldest woman to ever play in the Grand Slam main draw, surpassing Kimiko Date, who was 44 at the 2015 Australian Open.

“I’m excited to be back in Australia,” Williams said.

“I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”

The upcoming tournament will be Williams’ 22nd appearance at the Australian Open and her 95th in a major event. A winner of seven Grand Slam titles, she twice came to within one win of winning the trophy in Melbourne, but on both occasions, she lost to her sister, Serena, in 2003 and 2017. She has also won four doubles titles, as well as one mixed doubles title, at the event.

“Venus is a true legend and trailblazer of our sport — she’s an inspiration to us all,” Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said.

Prior to the announcement, Williams confirmed she would be travelling to the region after accepting a wildcard into the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. She has now confirmed her intention to also play at the Hobart International.

Last year, the American played five tournaments on the WTA Tour in her home country. However, she won only one singles match, which was against Peyton Sterns at the Citi Open in Washington. She is currently ranked 581st in the world.

Recently, Williams married  actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida. According to media reports, the marriage took place after a five-day celebration with friends and family.

The Australian Open will get underway on January 18th.
