Spain rallied from 0-2 against Denmark down to qualify for next November’s Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna.
Jaume Munar and Pedro Martinez came back from one set down to beat August Holmgren and Johannes Inglidsen 1-6 6-3 6-2 in the doubles match.
Pedro Martinez upset Holger Rune 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-3), when Spain was trailing 1-2. Martinez saved a match point when Rune was serving at 5-3 40-30 in the third set and went on to break serve in that game before sealing the win in the tie-break. Martinez improved to 2-0 in in his head-to-head matches against Rune.
“The feeling at Davis Cup is totally different. Maybe I get more nervous but, this adrenaline, it doesn’t work on some players. On me it gives me an extra motivation to play full. I feel the nerves, but I can handle them, and I think this motivation plays in my favour. Hopefully I can continue playing like this in Davis Cup. For me it’s one of the most important things in my career”, said Martinez.
Pablo Carreno beat Elmar Moller 6-2 6-3 in the decisive runner match to complete Spain’s come-back against Denmark in the Davis Cup tie in Marbella.
Carreno Busta broke twice in the second and eighth game to win the first set 6-2.
Moller held serve twice in the second set and earned two break points, but was not able to convert them. Carreno Busta broke Moller in the sixth game to seal the second set 6-2.
