Defending US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka is through to the semi-finals without hitting a ball, after Markéta Vondroušová was forced to retire through injury.

The news was announced via the official US Open Twitter page and means Sabalenka will now face American Jessica Pegula in a rematch of last year’s final, which the Belarusian won 7-5, 7-5.

It marks a heartbreaking end to the tournament for Vondroušová, who was looking back to her best after spending most of the last year on the sidelines through injury. Her quarter-final clash with Sabalenka was hotly anticipated after the Czech’s stunning three-set win over Elena Rybakina, but now she must deal with the disappointment of facing more time out to recover from this most cruel of setbacks.

Vondroušová issued the following official statement on her withdrawal via the US Open.

“I am sorry to announce that I have to withdraw from my quarterfinal match this evening due to a knee injury. I tried my best to take the court today but during the warm-up I felt again my knee and after consultation with the tournament doctor decided not to risk aggravating the injury. I appreciate all the support this tournament and apologize to the fans who were looking forward to the match. I had an amazing time here in New York and can’t wait to be back next year.”

Aryna Sabalenka has taken to Instagram to offer words of support for her fallen opponent.

“So sorry for Markéta after all she’s been through. She has been playing amazing tennis and I know how badly this must hurt for her. Take care of yourself and I hope you can recover quickly. Love, Aryna.

The US Open said they were working on a revised schedule but confirmed that the Novak Djokovic–Taylor Fritz quarter-final will not begin before 8pm New York time.
