Jannik Sinner cruised past Andrey Rublev 6-1 6-3 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

The world number one produced another impressive performance to dismantle the 17th seed and move into the last eight.

Next up for the Italian is Alexander Bublik after the Kazakh stunned Jack Draper in four sets.

The first two games saw Rublev apply a lot of pressure on Sinner as his early heavy hitting forced the world number one into errors.

Guess who won the first two games? That’s right Jannik Sinner! The Italian resisted the power from Rublev and counter-attacked with ruthless authority.

From then on Sinner repeated what he did against Jiri Lehecka as his consistent dominance was no match for an erratic Rublev.

A consolation game gave Rublev confidence heading into the second set but Sinner kept being bullyish from the back of the court.

After taking the first set, Sinner continued to be efficient on return as he broke at the start of the second set.

A more effective set was produced from Rublev on serve but the forehand was still too inconsistent to compete at the highest level.

Another break wrapped up a two set lead for Sinner as he looked well on his way to victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

The final set was a more competitive set and one that had Sinner worried at times with Rublev displaying the type of tennis that saw him reach regular quarter-finals and semi-finals at Grand Slams.

Once again Sinner was dominant on the big points as a missed backhand return into the net denied the break for Rublev.

Just as the set was heading towards a tiebreak, Sinner produced effortless control off both wings to force Rublev too his limits.

Despite a slight foot injury, Sinner broke to close out the win and secure his place in the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the match Sinner admitted he is ‘proud’ of the way he finished the match in straight sets, “I’m very happy and I’m so proud to finish the match in three sets,” Sinner was quoted by the BBC Sport website as saying in his on-court interview.

“I’m very happy obviously. We both know each other very well now. We have played against each other so many times already, so we both tried to change up our game styles a little bit. I’m so happy because things can go a bad way very quickly, especially in a best of five set match that can go so long.”

Sinner will play Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals with the Italian leading the head-to-head 3-1.
