Novak Djokovic will no longer be working alongside former rival Andy Murray after the two agreed to a mutual split just two weeks before the next Grand Slam.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion appointed Murray to his team last December in what was the Brit’s first role as a coach. The partnership showed promising signs early on in Australia where Djokovic reached the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International and then the semifinals of the Australian Open, where he retired from his match against Alexander Zverev due to injury. Then in March, he reached his first and so far only final of 2025 at the Miami Masters.

However, the Serbian has experienced a poor run on the clay and has yet to win a match on the surface this year. In Monte Carlo, he was beaten by Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo and then lost to Matteo Arnaldi in Madrid. He then decided to skip playing in Rome with his next event scheduled to be an ATP 250 event in Geneva, which takes place a week before the French Open.

“Thank you, coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun and support over the last six months on and off the court – really enjoyed deepening our friendship together,” Djokovic wrote on social media.

Murray, who retired from tennis at last summer’s Paris Olympics, said in a statement that he was thankful for the opportunity. Neither he nor Djokovic has given a reason why they have chosen to stop working together so close to the French Open.

“Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together, and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months,” said Murray.

“I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season.”

It is not known if anybody will be taking over Murray’s role in the coming days. Djokovic has been in Kosutnjak, Belgrade, training on the clay with his team. On May 10th, he held hitting sessions with players Viktor Jovic and Nikola Đošić, according to Sport Klub

Djokovic is currently ranked sixth in the world. He will be making his 21st appearance at the French Open, which he won in 2016, 2021 and 2023. Since 2010, he has reached the quarter-finals of better every year at the Grand Slam.
