Novak Djokovic has suffered a 6-3 6-4 defeat to Alejandro Tabilo in his opening clay court match of the season.

The Serb had reached the final of the Masters 1000 event in Miami and was hopeful that he could win title number 100 in Monaco.

However, a problem with his eye had hindered his preparations in Monte-Carlo and Djokovic lacked that clinical ability in big moments.

Both players shared the breaks to start the match before Djokovic played a careless game in the sixth game with Tabilo breaking comfortably for a 4-2 lead.

There was no sign of threat from Djokovic as Tabilo served aggressively to take the opening set 6-3.

In the second set a similar pattern emerged as Tabilo produced some attacking tennis to grind out the break for a 2-1 lead.

The Serb had opportunities to break especially in the eighth game but Djokovic always seemed a step slow with Tabilo coming up clutch in the big moments.

Despite failing to convert match point in the game before, Tabilo held his nerve to seal the biggest win of his career.

As for Djokovic a 100th career title will have to wait as his next tournament is set to be the Mutua Madrid Open in a couple of weeks.
